OpenAI and Arianna Huffington Launch Thrive AI Health

AI-Powered Health Coach for Personalized Wellness

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Huffington Post founder Arianna Huffington are joining forces to support Thrive AI Health, an innovative startup aimed at promoting healthier lifestyles through AI-powered assistance.

Thrive AI Health, backed by Thrive Global and the OpenAI Startup Fund, seeks to create an “AI health coach” offering personalized sleep, nutrition, fitness, stress management, and social connection advice. This AI assistant will deliver customized health tips, transforming how individuals manage their well-being.

Elon Musk

Leadership and Strategic Partnerships

DeCarlos Love, formerly of Google’s Fitbit, has been appointed CEO. Thrive AI Health also boasts strategic investments from the Alice L. Walton Foundation and a partnership with the Alice L. Walton School of Medicine, enhancing its resources and expertise.

While the exact investment amount remains undisclosed, inquiries have been made for clarification. The involvement of high-profile backers like Huffington and Altman indicates significant financial support.

Following up, Musk confirmed that Grok-3 would launch by the end of the year and will be trained using 100,000 Nvidia H100 chips. “Grok 3 end of year after training on 100k H100s should be really something special,” he added. This is a significant increase from the 20,000 H100 chips required to train Grok-2, as mentioned by Musk in an April interview with Nicolai Tangen, head of Norway’s sovereign fund.

Technological and Scientific Foundations

Huffington and Altman envision training the AI coach on scientific research and medical data. Collaborations with Stanford Medicine and other partners will ensure the AI provides reliable and scientifically-backed health recommendations, personalized to individual user behaviors.

The AI coach aims to deliver highly specific health recommendations, such as replacing sugary drinks with healthier options or adjusting daily routines for better health outcomes. This approach contrasts with generic health advice, offering a more personalized and effective solution.

Addressing Bias and Privacy Concerns

Aware of the biases found in previous AI models, Thrive AI Health is committed to ethical practices and transparency. The company has appointed Gbenga Ogedegbe from NYU Langone’s Institute for Excellence in Health Equity as an advisor, ensuring a focus on reducing health inequities.

Thrive AI Health emphasizes secure and privacy-sensitive data handling, aiming to avoid the privacy issues that have plagued other AI health projects, such as the DeepMind data controversy and recent data breaches.

A Cautious Yet Ambitious Venture

Thrive AI Health promises a thoughtful approach to democratizing health coaching through AI. Despite the challenges and skepticism, the combined expertise and resources of OpenAI and Thrive Global position it as a potential leader in AI-driven health solutions.
