James Gunn’s Update on the “Paradise Lost” Series
James Gunn recently provided an update on the DC Universe TV show “Paradise Lost,” marking a significant chapter in Wonder Woman’s mythology. While heroes like Superman and Batman are being reimagined for the big screen, Wonder Woman’s future in the franchise remains uncertain. Instead of a solo project, she will have a prequel series titled “Paradise Lost.”
Current Status of “Paradise Lost”
Known for his active engagement with fans on social media, Gunn, who is also the co-CEO of DC Studios and the director of Superman, was asked on Threads about the status of the “Paradise Lost” series. Although little information has surfaced since its initial announcement, Gunn confirmed that the show is still in development but has not been greenlit yet. He clarified:
Current Status of “Paradise Lost”
“Nothing is ‘in production’ unless it’s been greenlit. Right now that’s Superman, Supergirl, Penguin, Peacemaker, Lanterns, and a handful of animated projects. But Paradise Lost, like many other titles known and unknown, is still in very active development. It will be in production once we have a script or scripts we think are great and ready to shoot, never before. As an aside, we aren’t officially cast on anything that isn’t greenlit.”
Implications for Wonder Woman in the DCU
Despite being in development for over a year, Gunn’s recent update is not a negative indicator for the Wonder Woman prequel. There’s a clear distinction between a project being in development and receiving an official green light. In traditional TV development, a show must progress from development to pilot order before potentially receiving a series order, a process that differs in the streaming world.
Development Phases and Potential HBO Original
Without a showrunner or writers announced for “Paradise Lost,” Warner Bros. TV cannot give the show a pick-up until DC Studios solidifies its creative direction. It’s also essential to consider that “Paradise Lost” could become an HBO Original, similar to the “Lanterns” TV show and “The Penguin,” a Batman spinoff series, both initially labeled as Max Originals.
Future of “Paradise Lost”
If “Paradise Lost” joins the HBO slate, it justifies DC Studios’ thorough development process before finalizing the pitch. Given Wonder Woman’s vast mythology, DC Studios can explore much-unexplored territory in Themyscira’s early days. Hopefully, by the end of 2024, more updates on “Paradise Lost” will surface as the DC Universe lays the groundwork for its new take on Wonder Woman.
